2008 was a momentous year in the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations industry.
- The number of firms who were largely dedicated to BIM on more than 60% of their projects surpassed the number who were merely exploring BIM on less that 16% of their work.*

It stands to reason that firms who have implemented BIM will see this as a significant strategic advantage in the challenging economy.
While architects will still lead the BIM adoption, research shows that contractors are catching up fast. The aggressive ones are not waiting for the design professionals but are taking it on themselves to produce their own models to become more efficient in their processes.
Although still maturing, integrated tools for using BIM in support of sustainable design have started to show promise. Firms who have implemented integrated performance analysis BIM processes are recognizing significant value in optimizing their designs for better environmental performance.
